Leg. Act 17-07 The Marshal shall be appointed by the Principal Chief and confirmed by Council for a term of five (5) years. The Marshal shall be authorized to deputize law enforcement, as needed, for effective enforcement tribal laws within the jurisdiction of the Cherokee Nation. The Marshal shall be a Cherokee citizen possessing at a minimum a degree from a four-year college or university and an additional five years of experience in a supervisory in law enforcement or a related field.
The Marshal Service is on the front line of exercising sovereignty for the Cherokee people. These Marshals work and live within the 14 county jurisdictional base. Their training includes 16 weeks at F.L.E.T.C. (Federal Law Enforcement Training Center) in Artesia, New Mexico and or 10 weeks of state C.L.E.E.T. (Council Law Enforcement Education Training). They attend multiple trainings throughout the year to hone their skills in investigations, domestic intervention, drug interdiction and community policing.
The Marshal Service works to keep their communities safe and violence free thus exercising and maintaining tribal sovereignty.
